Gift a smile for a life time - Operation Smile

On 1 August 2011, six RBKIA students - Kush Parekh, Luv Parekh, Kahan Bhankharia (IBDP 2), Samantha Fernandez,  Rachel Madhani and Apeksha Trivady (Grade 10) travelled to Beijing, China, to participate in the International Student Cultural Exchange conducted by an NGO-  ‘Operation Smile’. Over seven hundred students attended this conference from 23 different countries of the world. The conference – which was conducted by a team of students - was held to spread intercultural awareness and also to create awareness about the mission and work of ‘Operation Smile’.

Operation Smile is an organization which facilitates surgeries for children with cleft lips and cleft palates. It also repairs other deformities like burns or unwanted growths. Over 2 lakh children are born with cleft lips and palates every year, often unable to speak, eat, socialize or SMILE. They are shunned by society and humiliated and teased by peers and sometimes disowned by their parents. Naturally most of them cannot go to school either.

In 1982, Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee, both surgeons, went to the Philippines to perform surgeries for people with this deformity and on going there realized that hundreds of people are in need of the surgery. Seeing this, they launched ‘Operation Smile’. The inspirational speakers motivated the students to ‘think big’ and ‘live our dreams’. The participants played games that helped them bond
Inspired by this conference The students now plan to introduce an ‘Operation Smile’ Club in our school. We hope that this club will spread the message of ‘Operation Smile’ to other schools in the city and even the country and that we can inspire our fellow students to make a difference in the lives of children who are less fortunate.

Children with cleft lips and cleft palates

Operation Smile measures their success by the joy seen on children’s faces. They are a mobilized force of medical professionals and caring hearts who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.

After surgery: A picture speaks thousands of words.
